We operate each day with the motto: Pets. People. Purpose.
Angel's Story
Save An Angel’s story began in 2009 in New Orleans, Louisiana, with a fight to save a remarkable dog named Angel. Diagnosed with Canine B-Cell Lymphoma—a disease with a survival rate of less than 2%—Angel faced overwhelming odds. To her devoted pet parents, Kristie and Johnny Sullens, Angel wasn’t just a pet; she was family—their child in every sense.
Angel’s only chance at survival was a groundbreaking canine bone marrow transplant, a procedure with a daunting $16,000 price tag—a cost that placed it out of reach for most families. However, Kristie and Johnny refused to give up. They sacrificed everything they could—selling personal belongings, giving up their wedding rings, and canceling their honeymoon—but it still wasn’t enough. Desperate to save her, they launched a grassroots fundraising campaign called Save An Angel. The community rallied behind the Sullens family, coming together to raise the life-saving funds. Against all odds, they succeeded.
In early 2010, Angel received a successful bone marrow transplant at North Carolina State University, becoming the fifteenth dog in the world to receive this cutting-edge treatment. Angel was cured! She went on to enjoy seven more joyful, cancer-free years before passing peacefully in May 2017.
What began as Kristie and Johnny’s fight to save their beloved dog sparked a movement far greater than they could have imagined. The animal welfare community that Angel's journey introduced them to changed their lives and ignited a mission to save and improve the lives of other animals in need. In April 2010, Save An Angel officially incorporated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit animal welfare organization, carrying Angel’s legacy forward.
Our Programs
Pet Wellness &
Spay/Neuter Clinic
Without affordable spay & neuter services, pet parents often find themselves with unwanted litters and nowhere to turn. We recognized this need in the community and opened Bastrop County, Texas' first brick-and-mortar, low-cost Spay & Neuter Clinic in December of 2019.
Animal Rescue
Every day we provide lifesaving care to homeless and at-risk dogs and cats that enter our Rescue Program. We believe in going above and beyond to give every animal the care and kindness they deserve.
Our team of dedicated foster families makes it possible for us to take in pets in need, provide medical care and rehabilitation when necessary, and place them into loving, forever homes.
Community Outreach & Education
We provide qualifying pet parents with free veterinary services and empower them with the resources and education needed to properly care for their pets. In September of 2022, we opened the doors to our Pet Resource Center. By providing families with pet food, collars, leashes, ID tags, and other essential items we are able to increase pet retention and keep dogs and cats healthy, happy, and ultimately, at home where they belong.
Operation Relocation
& Emergency Resp.
We work with a network of animal welfare organizations throughout the country to transport pets from high-kill shelters and areas affected by natural disasters to adopters, fosters, and organizations in other states who have the ability and resources to care for these animals.
